About the event
The developments of the Renaissance are largely associated with Italy. Yet at that time, changes were also taking place in northern Europe. Innovation radiated out of the city of Bruges, influencing thought across the north that eventually even reached Italy itself.
The impact of this ‘Other Renaissance’ on European culture was profound, shattering the limitations of medieval life and ushering in new ways of thinking about disciplines such art, science, literature, mathematics and medicine.
By exploring the lives of major figures such as Copernicus, Gutenberg, Catherine de’ Medici and Shakespeare, Paul Strathern reveals how some of the most significant advances of the early modern period originated in northern Europe.
