The event
In the 40th anniversary year of his bestselling novel War Horse, Michael Morpurgo brings together words and music in this very special concert, held in the historic Wren Chapel at the Royal Hospital Chelsea.
Accompanied by music from the hugely successful National Theatre production, Michael will be reading an abridged version of his much-loved story .
The music will be performed and sung by Ben Murray, an original ‘Songman’ from the National Theatre production.
Launching exclusively at the Chelsea History Festival, the concert will embark on a nationwide tour in the new year.
The performers
One of Britain’s best-loved storymakers, Michael Morpurgo has written over 150 books, including Private Peaceful, Kensuke’s Kingdom and War Horse, which became a National Theatre production and then, in 2011, a film directed by Steven Spielberg.
He was appointed Children’s Laureate in 2003, a post he helped to set up with Ted Hughes in 1999. He was then awarded an OBE in 2007 and a knighthood in 2018 for services to literature and charity.

Ben Murray is one of the founding members of band Tarras. After releasing three albums with the band, Ben has gone on to work extensively in the industry, recording and touring all over the world with artists.
Ben spent 2013 performing as ‘The Songman’ in the National Theatre’s production of War Horse. He played the same role in the final West End cast in 2016, and has recently performed in the international tour of the production. He continues to perform with Michael Morpurgo across the country at various festivals and literary events.
