As a nation we are obsessed by property: prices, interior design and restoration, and the creation of a home. Now, there is another avenue to explore: your house’s history.
Join Britain’s leading house historian, Melanie Backe-Hansen, as she uncovers the hidden stories and secrets of ordinary and extraordinary houses across the country. From workers’ cottages to aristocratic mansions, our homes can offer a unique insight into the social and architectural history of Britain.
In this special event, Melanie will highlight the histories of homes once occupied by famous figures and offer tips on how to approach researching the history of your own houses. She will be giving examples from Chelsea and beyond.
Melanie Backe-Hansen is a historian, writer and speaker, who specialises in researching the social history of houses, streets and areas throughout the United Kingdom.
Melanie is a research consultant for A House Through Time (BBC Two) and, to accompany the series, has co-written A House Through Time (Picador, 2020) with David Olusoga. She was series historical consultant for Phil Spencer’s History of Britain in 100 Homes (More4).
Melanie is also the author of House Histories: The Secrets Behind Your Front Door (The History Press, updated edition 2019), and Historic Streets and Squares: The Secrets on Your Doorstep (The History Press, 2013). She regularly writes articles and appears on TV and radio.
