About the event

Humans are a migratory species. For most of our existence we were all nomads. Houses and permanent settlements are a relatively recent development, dating back little more than 12,000 years. The reasons for migration have ranged widely, from civil war and poverty to curiosity and adventure.

Amid recent heated debate around migration and refugees, Sam Miller reflects on how migrants have been viewed in the past. He will consider the stories of famous migrants such as Christopher Columbus and Pocahontas, Alexander the Great and Barak Obama.

By looking at an alternative history of the world, which places migration at the heart of the human story, we can view today’s debate from a new perspective.
