About the event

Conveying the intricacy and reality of warfare and its human impact in real time is a challenging task that comes with a range of complex concerns over safety, ethics, and journalistic integrity.

Since the Crimean War in the mid-19th century, war correspondents have been a vital link between the front line and the public at home, sharing stories from the ground and communicating the multifaceted nature of conflict.

Between them, Caroline Wyatt and Jerome Starkey have covered contemporary conflicts across the globe, including Kosovo, Iraq, Afghanistan and the current war in Ukraine. They will discuss the challenges of reporting from war zones and reveal how this vital work is being conducted today.

About the speakers

Caroline Wyatt has reported on global affairs as a BBC foreign correspondent based in Germany, France and later Russia, as well as covering conflict in Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq, Chechnya and Israel. She served as the BBC’s defence correspondent from 2007 to 2014 and now works as the presenter of BBC Radio 4’s Saturday PM news programme.

Jerome Starkey is the Defence Editor at The Sun. He first worked for the newspaper in 2003 as a graduate trainee and re-joined in 2020, after being employed as a foreign correspondent for The Times.
