In 1838, a young woman was given a diary on her wedding day. Collecting snippets of fabric from a range of garments she carefully annotated each one, creating a unique record of her life and times. Her name was Mrs Anne Sykes.
Nearly 200 years later, her diary fell into the hands of Kate Strasdin, a fashion historian, who spent the next six years unravelling the secrets contained within its pages.
In this talk, Kate unveils Anne’s journey from the mills of Lancashire to the port of Singapore and her return to England in later years. She brings to life the story of an ordinary woman and her everyday life in Victorian Britain and the British Empire through the medium of her wardrobe and the clothes she chose to wear.
Kate Strasdin is a senior lecturer at Falmouth University, teaching histories and theories on Fashion Design, Performance Sportswear Design, Fashion Photography and Fashion Marketing.
She is the author of Inside the Royal Wardrobe: A Dress History of Queen Alexandra, and is the honorary deputy curator at the Totnes Fashion and Textile Museum in Devon.
