About the event

The varied built environment of Great Britain offers an insight into the social, political and economic change that has taken place on these islands over the centuries.

By comparing buildings old and new, Steven Parissien traces the growing sense of British nationhood through the country’s architecture. With the passage of time, older structures have taken on additional significance, being used by later generations to signpost, mythologise and access Britain’s history.

From the ancient baths at Aquae Sulis to Liberty’s London, and from Lincoln Cathedral to the Electric Cinema in Notting Hill, this talk showcases how our buildings reveal a great deal about the lives and values of the Britons who built them.

About the speaker

Steven Parissien is Director of Studies for Architectural History at Oxford University, Fellow of Kellogg College, Oxford, and Interim Director of Gainsborough’s House Museum in Sudbury.
