The event

For over a millennium, the English – later British – monarchy has endured almost continuously through periods of personal and political strife, triumph, war and peacetime.

Join historians and broadcasters Peter Snow and Ann MacMillan, ahead of the release of their new book, as they speak about the lives and reigns of people who have headed up this enduring institution.

They will offer a unique insight into the waxing and waning fortunes of formidable rulers from Alfred the Great to Queen Elizabeth II, taking in colourful characters such as the devious King John and the fabled William the Conqueror.

By examining the lives of some of most powerful men and women in our nation’s history, Snow and MacMillan will demonstrate how we can better understand the evolution of modern civilisation and the development of British society.

The speakers

Peter Snow is a highly respected journalist, author, and broadcaster. He was ITN’s Diplomatic and Defence Correspondent form 1966 to 1979, and presented BBC’s Newsnight from 1980 to 1997. For many years, he was an indispensable part of election nights.

Ann MacMillan was one of Canada’s first female reporters and moved to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s London Bureau after she married Peter Snow in 1976. They co-authored War Stories: Gripping Tales of Courage, Cunning and Compassion in 2017.
