About the event

In 16th-century Europe, two women came to hold all the power: Elizabeth I and Catherine de’ Medici. Elizabeth is famed for ruling her kingdom alone, while Catherine is seen as a master of control over the French throne.

In this talk, Estelle Paranque examines the complex relationship between these two iconic women and two major international powers. She will trace their friendship through their letters to one another, and reveal how the competition and conflict between them changed not only their lives, but the face of Europe.

About the speaker

Estelle Paranque is an Assistant Professor in History at Northeastern University London. She has participated in several international historical documentaries, including BBC Two’s The Boleyns: A Scandalous Family, where she shared her knowledge of Anglo-French relations under Henry VIII’s reign.

She has published extensively on the Tudors and the House of Valois, and is the author of Elizabeth I of England Through Valois Eyes.
